Objectives:

Action is the response of the ‘so what’ of learning. 'Now What'

PYP schools develop a culture where all learners have the opportunity and
autonomy to act, to decide on their actions, and to reflect on these actions

Quote: Life is a path you beat while you walk it. - Antonio Machado

Session Starter:
Tuning into our thinking about action
  • What colour would you choose to best represent your current thinking about action?
  • What symbol would best represent your current thinking about action?
  • What image(picture/drawing) would best illustrate your current thinking about action?

Now that we have a metaphor for what Action is, let’s look at what other people think it is...This will occur over the next two sessions.

Learning Experiences:

1.Who are our students?
At your table create a list of the attributes our students bring to school with them. List these attributes under two headings:
Supports action- Caring, Naturally Inquisitive
Hinders action- perfection, unmotivated, nanny culture

2. If these are the students we have in our school, what then should our teaching and learning look like?
At your table reflect.

3.Using the IB mission statment, again look for words and phrases with in the mission that support action.

"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."

4. What connections are there between the Action Mess/ Bundling that elicit action from the school's mission statement.

"It is our mission to ensure that in a safe, tranquil, stimulating and intellectually challenging environment, all students shall have ample opportunity to:
  • Imbibe universal values;
  • Identify and fulfill academic, cultural, sporting and social potential through multiple paths to learning;
  • Acquire habits of curiosity, reflection, mental flexibility, independence and self-discipline;
  • Attain skills and attitudes for life in a rapidly changing world;
  • Develop a respect and concern towards the environment;
  • Maintain openness and respect in the face of racial, cultural, religious and linguistic diversity.

5. Does your school mission statement reflect your definition of action, your students and your teaching and learning?
How does this impact our school?
Will there be an opportunity to follow this up in the future if indeed there is a disconnect?

Fundamental Concept:
Still working towards a definition of action....please keep this in mind
In what ways does your school and community model action? Create a list of ways in which students in their classroom/school/ community have engaged in action? Do this on sentence strips.
Think about.....
School wide projects (Making life jackets for flood victims)
UOI's focused on action (Habitat UOI- beach clean up)
UOI's that lead to action throughout (Planning a trip)
UOI's that end in some type of action (Friendships)
Individual lessons that led to action (Bringing in a resource to share)
Action within everyday life at school (Student Council/disaster relief)

Explore IB standards directly related to action.

  • The written curriculum allows for meaningful student action in response to students’ own needs and the needs of others.
  • Teaching and learning develops student attitudes and skills that allow for meaningful student action in response to students’ own needs and the needs of others.
  • Teaching and learning encourages students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Take a quick look at the Standards and Practices. Are there any others that are indirectly linked to Action? We will add them to our wiki.
Now read p. 25-27 in the PYP Making it Happen. How do your examples relate to the definition by PYP?
