When individuals are engaged in relevant, significant and challenging
learning, action will happen

Quote: Never doubt that a small group of committed individuals can change the world. Indeed it is the only thing that ever has. - Margaret Mead

Session Starter:
Share action Bingo. It can be a resource to promote a discussion on what action is in a classroom.

Learning experience:

Introduce the Shier model very briefly. It's found on the Internet here,
Shier's Pathways to Participation

Look at Shier's model and discuss their school and where they are on the model. Discuss any observations.
I like the point the author makes when he compares Shier's model to Hart's ladder.....Sometimes the purpose of a ladder is not to go all the way to the top.

Fundamental Concept:
Introduce Criteria 6 Invites Student Choice and Voice

Theoretical frame – Dewey and Rosenblatt on the balance of individual voice and group responsibility
  • Right to participate meaningfully in the decisions that affect our lives and in determining what those choices are
  • Valuing individual voice and the need for that voice to be expressed in significant ways as well as accepting responsibility for the effect of individual decisions on the group and recognizing and remaining open to the perspectives of others

Return to your chart and continue plotting your examples of action under this criteria.

Think of your current UOI or an upcoming UOI and try and come up with or invent an action based engagement and plot it on your criteria handout. Share back.
